Sometimes the best thing you can do for a photo is to take what seems to be a pretty monotoned background (ie. a white bathtub, a large green lawn, a turquoise pool) and add a POP of color to the photo. The pop doesn’t have to come from anything fancy – it can come from any old day-to-day household thing you already have, but that pop should be the thing you add to the photo to make your photo interesting.
Sure, Julie’s captured an awesome moment here with Aiden and all his bubbles, but what makes this photo interesting is two key things. One, he’s not looking up at the camera beaming away proudly – he’s too busy doing his own thing to bother with that! And two, the orange cup makes the entire photo have more depth. It gives the bubbles definition, it warms up Aiden’s skin tone, and it even helps give contrast to Aiden’s dark hair and lashes.
So next time you go out for a walk with your kiddo in Stanley Park, make sure to pack a deep red sunhat for him, or grab a bright yellow balloon she can drag around with her. What were going to be good photos, might turn out to be GREAT photos.
